Description: Students who have used this very popular database program in a limited way, or students who participated in the Beginner’s Level class previously offered by the NNYLN will find this Level 2 class helpful in learning to fully utilize the powerful features of Microsoft Access. It can be much more than the basic database program that it is perceived to be, and this class can help students realize that potential. For those using a previous version of Access, the class can still be useful. The concepts remain the same, but users of previous versions should realize that the screens will look different.

Description: The Northern New York Library Network welcomes with pleasure New York State Librarian Bernard Margolis to this year’s Annual Meeting.
This will be Mr. Margolis’ first visit to the North Country, and will be the first opportunity for area library staff to offer him their thoughts and concerns about New York’s libraries. Mr. Margolis will address the group at lunch, and will share with us his vision and prospective plans for New York’s libraries.
This will be the best opportunity to let the State Librarian get to know us, to understand us and learn about our unique challenges and talents, all on the "Home Turf" of the Northern New York Library Network. Please plan to join your colleagues at Clarkson University on May 21, 2009 for this special occasion.
It would be great if representatives from every NNYLN member library could attend this year's Annual Meeting to show Mr. Margolis first hand how diverse and interesting our section of the state is.
In addition to the visit by Mr. Margolis, the Annual Meeting provides opportunities for continuing education through three Discussion Groups:"Grant Writing" with April Bender, Partnerships for Quality: In the current economy libraries are losing funds from the traditional sources of federal, state and local governments. It has become more and more important that libraries and librarians seek other sources of funds.
One method that can be of use to libraries is to begin to seek grant funding. This year’s annual meeting will provide a beginning step to finding and securing grant funding. Ms. Eden will provide an overview of the grant writing process. She will discuss how to find institutions that give grants to libraries, how to approach these institutions, and what information needs to be included in a successful grant application."The Google You Don’t Know" with Paul Doty, St. Lawrence University: In this session, Mr. Doty will provide a look at some of the lesser known utilities and functions of Google.
While all librarians know about Google’s search engine, its maps functions, and book search and image management programs, there’s really so much more. Google can, for example, translate documents and phrases, provide ways to share information and communications, use mobile search functions, and much more."Disaster Preparedness" with Joseph Swinyer, DHP Consultant: Sometimes learning by doing is not the best way. Learning to clean up and recover materials after a catastrophic event has occurred is one such occasion. The time to learn how to deal with a disaster is before it happens, and Mr. Swinyer will lead this group discussion on how to prepare for those events. The session will deal with the three aspects of disaster planning: prevention, response and recovery. This year’s Annual Meeting will also include the presentation of the Network’s Award for Excellence in Library Service.
