More Editions Added To Historical Newspapers

Phase III of the Press Republican project is a work in progress.
The bound volumes were recently boxed up at the NNYLN office and shipped out to be microfilmed.

The first of three phases to bring 61 years of history online from Plattsburgh’s Press-Republican has been completed.

Issues spanning 1959-1992 completes the first phase, which totals 270,000 pages. They have been added to the Northern New York Historical Newspapers website, available free of charge at news.nnyln.net. The entire site currently consists of more than 910,000 pages from 27 regional newspapers.

The Northern New York Historical Newspapers are provided by the NNY Library Network to enhance access to the region’s unique local history.

NNYLN Executive Director John Hammond explained Phase I of the process for the Press-Republican began over the summer of 2007. Phase II will include issues from 1931-1942, and has been microfilmed and is set to be scanned and posted in the coming weeks. Phase III will include issues from 1943-1958. The bound issues of the newspaper for this final stage have been received at the Network office and shipped out to be microfilmed. Once the Network receives the microfilm, it will also be scanned and posted to the NNY Historical Newspapers website. All three phases are expected to be completed by May 2008. Funds for the microfilming of phases II and III have been provided by a grant from the Conservation / Preservation Program administered by the New York State Library.

Along with the completion of the first stage of the Plattsburgh project, the Network also recently loaded the Clarkson Integrator, the student newspaper of the college, to the Historical Newspapers website. Whether people are looking for information on Ice Carnival, a particular professor, scholarships, or new/improved academic buildings at Clarkson University, the search has just been made easier.

Clarkson Integrator issues spanning 1920-April 2007 totals 10,000 pages. Mounting the Clarkson Integrator on the web was a shared-cost project of Clarkson University’s Harriet Call Burnap Memorial Library and the Network. The library archives now have a preservation microfilm copy of the newspaper as well as access to the on-line version.

Other papers on the NNY Historical Newspapers website are: Adirondack Record-Elizabethtown Post, Akwesasne Indian Time, Canton Commercial Advertiser, Cardinal Points of SUNY Plattsburgh, Chateaugay Journal & Chateaugay Record, Elizabethtown Post, Essex County Republican, Fort Covington Sun, Fulton Patriot, Gouverneur Tribune-Press and others, Lake Placid News, Lowville Journal & Republican, Malone Farmer, Malone Franklin Gazette, North Country Catholic, Ogdensburg Advance and Ogdensburg Advance-News, Oswegonian of SUNY Oswego, Press-Republican, Plattsburgh Republican, Plattsburgh Sentinel, Potsdam Herald-Recorder, Potsdam St. Lawrence Herald, St. Regis Falls Adirondack News, Saranac Lake Adirondack Daily Enterprise, Ticonderoga Sentinel, and Watertown Herald.
