Lake Placid Education Foundation Aids Project

NNYLN Historical Newspaper Project Scanner Denise Bullock begins
a new project as she loads microfilm onto the new scanner.

The Network's Northern New York Historical Newspapers project has been enhanced with the purchase of a Mekel Mach IV microfilm scanner made possible with a generous grant from the Lake Placid Education Foundation. The new scanner is rated at 300 images per minute and will allow much faster scanning of newspaper microfilm.

"With this new equipment we will be able to process many more historical newspapers and make them readily available to researchers," said Thomas Blauvelt, project coordinator.

The Northern New York Historical Newspapers project currently consists of more than 630,000 pages from 25 newspaper titles published in the Network's service area.

Some recent additions are the North Country Catholic newspaper from 1946 to 1991, and two student newspapers from local colleges: Cardinal Points of SUNY Plattsburgh, 1940-2006, and The Oswegonian, 1935-2002. The Clarkson Integrator student newspaper is in preparation.

The Historical Newspapers site has performed over 1.1 million searches since 2004. The URL is http://news.nnyln.net
