Four New Courses Are Introduced

The Northern New York Library Network is pleased to announce the addition of four brand new courses to its continuing education schedule. The new classes will be held over the summer during July and August.

"Digital Photography" will be held Thursday, July 19, 2007. Registration is 9:00-9:30 a.m., and class time is 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students will jump into digital photography concepts, selecting and using cameras, setting up shots for better results, getting pictures from memory cards, and backing up those pictures. Students will also spend a bit of time on gallery and basic photo editing applications. Bring your camera! The instructor will be James Crowley, Crowley Computers.

"Creating a Vision for Library Space Planning" will be held Tuesday, July 24, 2007. Registration is 8:30-9:00 a.m., and class time is 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This working session is designed to actively engage participants in creating strategies for developing and justifying improved library space. This program is appropriate for library planners, administrators, and all staff involved in library space planning. The instructor will be Scott Bennett, Yale University Librarian Emeritus.

"Basic Cataloging 411" or "How I learned that catalogers are NOT trying to make my life difficult!" will be held Thursday, August 2, 2007. Registration is 8:30-9:00 a.m., and class time is 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This program is appropriate for anyone looking to refresh or acquire basic cataloging skills. Participants will learn how their catalogs work and why the catalog works the way it does. The instructors will be Marguerite Horn, Library Data and Systems Analyst, Office of Library and Information Services, SUNY; and John F. Myers, Catalog Librarian, Union College.

"Computer Security" will be held Monday, August 13, 2007. Registration is 9:00-9:30 a.m., and class time is 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students will explore the methods of attack (keyloggers, spyware, Trojans and viruses), where attacks can come from (email, IM, network connections, P2P, removable storage, web pages), and protecting computers without going broke. The instructor will be James Crowley, Crowley Computers.

All classes will be held at the NNYLN. The fee will be $15.00 for library staff, and $59.95 for all others. Lunch will be included.
