5 Gouverneur Papers Added To Site

A compilation of 140 years of Gouverneur history is now available on-line to libraries, researchers, and the general public.

Five local newspapers totaling 97,000 pages, have been added to the Northern New York Historical Newspapers website available at news.nnyln.net.

The new titles included are the Gouverneur Times 1864-1878, Gouverneur Herald 1873-1884, Gouverneur Free Press 1882-1929, Northern Tribune 1887-1929, and Tribune- Press 1929-2004. These titles join 21 other newspapers.

The Historical Newspapers website is provided by the Northern New York Library Network based out of Potsdam, and this project was produced in cooperation with the Gouverneur-Tribune-Press and the Reading Room Association of Gouverneur.

Although the Gouverneur papers were just recently added, they are already being utilized.

"I was so thrilled yesterday to discover that you have added newspapers from Gouverneur to your site," user Joyce Ranieri of Brushton, NY said. "I had been planning a trip (two+ hours) to Gouverneur over Easter vacation to search for an obituary for my husband's great-great-grandfather. Within five minutes of discovering that you had added the newspapers, I had found it! I can't begin to thank you for the tremendous service you are doing by placing this material online!"

Reading Room Director Charlotte Garolfalo noted, "It is so nice to have these papers available for everyone to use, not just the people who can make the trip to Gouverneur. And the fact that they can do a name or item search is wonderful. I have given the address to a few other people to try and I'm waiting for feedback from them. I couldn't be happier with the project. Thank you so much for all you did."

The Historical Newspapers website was started just over three years ago, and to date, has been searched more than three million times. The most common searches are for family names and friends, historical figures, obituaries, buildings and businesses.
