MLS Grant Recipient Shares Her Experience

Teresa Fenton of the Canton Free Public Library is a recipient of the New York State Library’s Making It REAL! Grant. The NNY Library Network is working in conjunction with the state on this program. Ms. Fenton is in the process of earning her MLS degree. The following is an update written by her on her progress and experiences.

My experiences with distance learning have been extremely positive. Distance learning requires both dedication and discipline. By the end of my first semester, I was able to put together a study schedule that worked for me. I was able to devote time to reading, writing, and research for each class. Once I was able to work out this schedule, studying became a dedicated habit. The trick for me to stay on top of everything was to study ahead. Working on papers one month before they are due is not only crucial, but also necessary because of the immense workload.

I have found my classmates to be both friendly and supportive. We come from all occupations and every state in the U.S. For most, the MLS is a second career move. There are high numbers of teachers who are retiring and moving into the library field. One student is becoming a librarian after teaching for 33 years. Most of us also have some experience working in a public or school library. This helps when we exchange ideas. One of the most interesting aspects has been learning how libraries operate in different states. Most of the MLS students at my school reside and work in Connecticut where the school is located. I have enjoyed reading about how Connecticut libraries operate.

Distance learning works for me. I like the freedom of not having to attend weekly classes. I especially enjoy doing research at the St. Lawrence University library. I have found their reference librarians to be friendly and knowledgeable.
