Library Assistants Enjoy Day Of Activities

The NNY Library Network hosted the Library Assistants Fall Conference on Nov. 9, 2006 at SUNY Canton.

There were over 20 assistants in attendance representing public and college libraries in Potsdam, Norfolk, Canton, Plattsburgh, Watertown, Old Forge, and Saranac Lake.

During the morning session, David Norenberg, Director of Career Services at SUNY Canton, spoke on "Exploring Leadership." He helped the participants explore the nature of leadership. Through looking at leaders in literature and popular culture, including Henry V, Twelve Angry Men and Elizabeth I, Mr. Norenberg led the group to explore the actions and characteristics of good and bad leaders to create the ideal leader and the tyrant.

According to Mr. Norenberg, leadership is about participation, unification, inspiration, self-knowledge, courage, integrity and expectations. Each participant identified leadership qualities they wished to develop in themselves.

In the afternoon, SUNY Canton Police Department Officer Brett Furnia gave a presentation on "Personal Safety." He spoke on how citizens should recognize a threat, and what they should do if threatened at home, while driving or at work.

The conference ended following a tour of the Southworth Library lead by Librarian Doug Welch. He spoke about the collection and services available.

Following the conference, the Library Assistants Committee met at the Network office in Potsdam.

Rita Bridgen of SUNY Potsdam is shown reviewing her group’s
project with assistance from Mr. Norenberg.

Officer Furnia is shown giving his presentation.

Participants are shown in small groups working on a project conducted by Mr. Norenberg.
