Archives Week 2006

Archives Week 2006 is being celebrated October 8-14 and the public is invited to attend the events being sponsored throughout the state.

The Northern New York Library Network’s Documentary Heritage Program is proud to announce the following activities in its region:

Essex County
  • The Sherman Free Library, 20 Church Street, Port Henry, will be sponsoring "Northward to Freedom" on October 12, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. During this lecture, Don Papson will present new discoveries about freedom seekers who followed the Lake Champlain Underground Railroad passageway.     Franklin County

  • The Westville History Center, 3510 State Rt. 37, Westville Center, will be host to an open house and dedication of the building from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on October 14, 2006. The program will include a ribbon cutting, antiques appraisal fundraiser, displays, and the genealogy library will be open. There will be tours of the new building built by members and the community through donations and labor, and recognition of $13,000 in grant monies.   • The Franklin County Historical and Museum Society, 51 Milwaukee St., Malone, is sponsoring "Franklin County in Three Wars." It will be on-going through June 1, 2007, Saturdays, 1:00-4:00 p.m. or by appointment. This temporary exhibit features items from the Franklin County Historical and Museum Society collection for the Civil War and World Wars I & II.     Hamilton County

  • The Long Lake Town Hall will showcase Long Lake and Raquette Lake histories, including records and pictures from the mid-1800s of government, business, people, areas schools, and activities. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 12 & 13, 2006. It is sponsored by the Long Lake Archives. For more information, contact Bonnie Halstead at 518-624-5374 or 3088.

    Jefferson County

  • The Jefferson County Historical Society, 228 Washington St., Watertown, will sponsor "Open Archives" on Oct. 11, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. During this open house, the public is invited to view the archives collection free of charge. For more information, contact Christine at 315-782-3491.
    Oswego County

  • The Sandy Creek History Center, 1992 Hardwood Drive, will be host to "History Comes Alive in Sandy Creek" from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on October 13, 2006. During this open house, a tour of the facility will be provided, and help with family research from the Center’s extensive archives will be available. The event is being sponsored by the Sandy Creek Historian’s office. For more information, contact Charlene Cole at 315-387-5456, ext. 7.

  • The New Haven Town Offices, 4279 St Rt 104, will be host to "New Haven Past, Present and Future" from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on October 14, 2006. This open house will provide displays of New Haven’s history. There will be research material available and a records management program. The event is being sponsored by the New Haven History Center and New Haven Town Clerk. For more information, contact Debra Allen or Marie Strone at 315-963-3900.

    St. Lawrence County

  • SUNY Canton, Southworth Library Lobby, Cornell Drive, Canton is sponsoring "SUNY Canton Students - Then & Now" from Oct. 8-14, 2006. Viewing times are Mon-Thurs: 8:00-10:00 a.m., Fri: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Sat: 1:00-5:00 p.m., and Sun: 2:00-10:00 p.m. This exhibit will provide a brief look at how student behavior has changed (or not changed) over the years.   • St. Lawrence County Historical Association, 3 East Main Street, Canton is sponsoring "Historical Scavenger Hunt" from October 8-14, 2006. The event will be Tuesday - Saturday: noon - 4:00 p.m., and until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Local residents are being asked to submit their most interesting photograph, certificate or other document to the St. Lawrence Country Historical Society’s "Historical Scavenger Hunt." Bring items to the Society during Archives Week and it will be scanned. The best entries will be put on display in the archives this fall.
