A Second ArcGIS Systems Class Has Been Added

Due to popular demand, the NNYLN will add a second section of the workshop: Introduction to ArcGIS Systems to its fall continuing education schedule. The additional section of the workshop will be held on October 19, 2006.

The class will be held at the OD Young Library, St. Lawrence University in Canton. The cost of the class is 15.00 for library staff and $59.95 for all others. Lunch is included. Sign-in will be from 9:00-9:30 a.m., and class time will be 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. This is an introductory level course. The instructors are Carol Cady, GIS Specialist /Maps Librarian; and Bill Olsen, Science Instrumentation GIS/GPS Technician, both of St. Lawrence University.

This workshop will introduce students to major GIS concepts and give them instruction to get started with ESRI ArcGIS. Through a series of instructor-led exercises, students will learn how to use ArcView to display, edit, query, and analyze geographic data. Each participant will produce a map. The day will also include discussion of resources for additional GIS instruction.

Topics will include:

  • GIS concepts: What is GIS and how does it work
  • Getting started with maps and data: Exploring ArcMap and ArcCatalog
  • Coordinate systems and datums: Projecting data in ArcMap
  • Displaying data: Symbolizing, classifying and labeling data
  • Getting information about features: Querying data, joining and relating tables
  • Analyzing spatial relationships: Selecting features by location, preparing data for analysis, analyzing spatial data
  • Data sources: Data sources on the web, importing tabular data, geocoding addresses
  • Presenting sata: Making maps for presentation, paper maps and digital formats
