Students Enjoy Cemetery Workshop

More than 35 people attended Stone Strategies: Documentation, Stewardship and Conservation of Historic Cemeteries on October 24, 2005.

Those attending were treated to a two-part presentation. In the morning, Dianne MacPherson and Erica Blumenfeld presented information detailing aspects of conservation and stewardship as they apply to historic cemeteries. Their presentation included cemetery regulations, determining cemetery ownership, tips on preventing cemetery theft, recording cemetery data, finding aids for locating documentation, resources for cemetery records, and much more.

In the afternoon, C.R. Jones, a certified conservator with the New York State Historical Association, Cooperstown, NY led the group through the Grant/ French Cemetery. The cemetery, located about a half-mile from the NNYLN office, predates the Civil War, and as is often the case in older cemeteries, has many markers and stones that show various kinds of damage and wear.
