Archives Week 2005, October 9-15

Archives Week 2005 is being celebrated October 9-15 and the public is invited to attend the events being sponsored throughout the state. The Northern New York Library Network’s Documentary Heritage Program is proud to announce the following activities in its region:

Essex County

  • The Lake Placid Public Library, 2471 Main St., will be hosting an "Archival Room Open House" from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on October 10, 12, 14, 2005. The historian/president of the Library will be present to present archival room and archives from the Lake Placid Club, and those collected by Mary MacKenzie during the 37 years she served as a former historian.   • The Wells Memorial Library, 12230 NYS Rte 9N, Upper Jay, will be hosting "Tea & Talk - When Folks Don’t Say Cheese!" at 1:00 p.m. on October 12, 2005. During this discussion and display, participants are asked to bring old photos of identified people and give a brief description of the person(s) and/or location. Library personnel are hoping to be able to copy the photos for their archives. For more information, contact Sylvia Norton at 518-946-2687.

  • The Sherman Free Library, 20 Church St., Port Henry, will be hosting "The Underground Railroad Along Lake Champlain" at 7:00 p.m. on October 13, 2005. During this Lecture event, North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association President Don Papson will share the exciting process of documenting stories of freedom, slavery, and the antislavery movement in the Lake Champlain region.   • The Wilmington Historical Society will be hosting "Wilmington: Then & Now" from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on October 15, 2005 at the Wilmington Community Center, 7 Community Center Circle. There will be a slide show and displays of Wilmington "then and now." There will also be an Old Photo Meet, which will give community residents a chance to share old photos to be copied for preservation and use by the Wilmington Historical Society.     Lewis County

  • The Town of Croghan Municipal Office, Route 126, Beaver Falls will be the host site for "Highlighting Croghan’s History," being held from 12:00-8:00 p.m. on October 14, 2005. There will be a historical display, along with a slide show, and a display describing what the historian does. Lewis County is celebrating its Bicentennial Year (1805-2005), and there will be brief highlights of the history of the town of Croghan, including the hamlets of Beaver Falls, Indian River, Naumburg and Belfort, and the village of Croghan.     Oswego County

  • The Hannibal Historical Society, 346 Church St., Hannibal, will be hosting "From Bootjacks to Jewelry" from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., October 10-14, 2005. There will be an exhibit depicting the history of the oldest commercial building in the village of Hannibal. The exhibit will include photos and text.   • The Pulaski Historical Society will be hosting two events at two locations. There will be an exhibit of documents from the archives of the Pulaski Historical Society from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., on October 1-31, 2005 at the Pulaski Public Library, 4917 Jefferson St. There will be an open house with an exhibit of documents from the archives and a tour of the museum from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., on October 15, 2005 at the Pulaski Historical Society, 3428 Maple St, Pulaski.   • The Sandy Creek History Center, 1992 Harwood Dr., will be hosting "Sandy Creek Veterans" from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on October 14, 2005. This World War I and II exhibit is a year-long celebration honoring the veterans of Sandy Creek, which has produced two books on the World Wars, and a military history display covering all of the wars.     St. Lawrence County

  • A lecture and discussion entitled "Searching for Minerva's Sisters: Involving Students in Archival Research," will be presented on October 12, 2005 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. at the Learning and Teaching Excellence Center (LTEC), 1st Floor, F.W.Crumb Library, SUNY Potsdam. It will be presented by Anne Malone, Director of Women's Studies and Associate Professor of English, Department of English & Communication at SUNY Potsdam. The surrounding non-campus community, in addition to the SUNY Potsdam college community, are all welcome to attend this lecture by Ms. Malone, which will include information regarding her sabbatical work interviewing women graduates of the Potsdam Normal School. After the lecture, there will be a discussion period for comments and questions, followed by the opportunity to visit the College Archives and Special Collections (Snell Room, 2nd floor of Crumb Library). Attendees may attend all or part of the event, as their schedules allow. The event is being sponsored by the SUNY Potsdam College Archives and Special Collections, SUNY Potsdam Learning and Teaching Excellence Center, and SUNY Potsdam Women's Studies Program.   • The St. Lawrence County Historical Association will be hosting "History’s Mysteries" October 10-15, 2005 at the Silas Wright House, 3 East Main St., Canton. It will be held from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, and from 12:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday. This exhibit will host a display showcase with photos from the Society’s collection of people, buildings and locations that are unidentified. Forms will be provided for people to fill out if they can identify the photos. For more information, contact JeanMarie Martello at 315-386-8133.
