Library Assistants Enjoy 2004 ConferenceLibrary Assistants from throughout the North Country gathered for a lively day of presentations and discussion at the Northern New York Library Network in Potsdam on November 17. Julia Rapcznski, an expert in aerobics, personal training and Yoga, presented the first session, leading the group through techniques designed to relieve mental and physical stress, and to improve strength and flexibility. Stress often occurs when library assistants spend long, consecutive hours at their desks. Many of the techniques can be done while sitting at a desk. This was an active hour, with many vowing to take the techniques back to their home libraries. Dr. Harvey Smith, SUNY Potsdam Professor, who teaches a course on "Developing a Positive Self-Image," presented this topic to the assistants. He got the group involved with interesting ideas, many funny anecdotes, and even a bit of song and dance! He encouraged the group to dare to be different, promote laughter, and create a caring environment in their libraries. During the afternoon roundtable discussion, assistants shared concerns about appropriate methods to get items returned to the library, and improving techniques for working with student and adult volunteers. Co-Chairs of the Northern New York Library Assistants, Tracey LaBarge and Dayna Cole, planned the event. Following the conference, the Library Assistants Committee met. Watch for a survey in January to help determine topics for future Library Assistants Conferences. (Continue to page 3 for photos of the Conference.) Back to Newsletters |
