Archives Week 2004 - October 10-16
Archives Week 2004 is being celebrated October 10-16 and the public is invited to attend
the events being sponsored throughout the state. The Northern New York Library Network’s
Documentary Heritage Program is proud to announce the following activities in its region:
Clinton County
- The Rouses Point-Champlain Historical Society will be hosting "Once Upon a Time
in Rouses Point" from 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Oct. 10-16 at Sample’s Butcher Shop, 86
Champlain St., Rouses Point. The exhibit will have over 30 pictures of old Main Street
houses in Rouses Point. For more information, call 518-297-6548.
Essex County
- The Wilmington Historical Society will be hosting "Wilmington Old Photo
Meet" from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on October 16 at the Wilmington Town Hall/Community
Center. People are requested to bring old family photo albums of Wilmington to identify and
share, and (with permission) to scan or re-photograph to be added to the historical
archives. Susan Conway of Creative Memories will also be on hand. She will have a table
display and will answer questions about archiving and preserving family photos. For more

- The Essex County Clerk will be hosting an exhibit from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.,
October 11-15 at the Clerk’s Office, 7559 Court Street, Elizabethtown. This program will be
an exhibit of old taverns of Essex County, and an exhibit of Frontier Town, a famous park

- The Sherman Free Library will be hosting a display at the library located at 20
Church St., Port Henry. The display will be available from 12:00-4:00 p.m. on October 12
and 13; 12:00-7:00 p.m. on October 14 and 15; and from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on October
16. There will be many items on display relating to the local mining industry. On Oct. 14 a

Franklin County
- The Almanzo & Laura Ingalls Wilder Association will be hosting "Introduction
to the Archives" from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on October 14 and 15 at the Wilder Farm, 177 Stacy
Road, Burke. The archives will be open for viewing to show the public what is available for
research in the early life of Almanzo Wilder, husband of Laura Ingalls Wilder. For more

Oswego County
- The Palermo Town Historian is hosting "History Day" from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00
p.m. at the Palermo Town Hall, 53 County Rt. 35. This open house will offer a display of
historical information, photos, genealogy searches, obituary files, and marriage notices.

- The Sandy Creek History Center will be hosting "History is Alive in Sandy
Creek" from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on October 12 and 15. During this open house/exhibit,
attendees will see that early settlers arrived in what is now the town of Sandy Creek in
1803. This area is rich in history, and several grants have been written in an effort to
preserve the many historic photos and artifacts of the town and village of Sandy Creek and
the village of Lacona. Artifacts will be on display featuring items from World War I and
World War II, in conjunction with materials that have been accumulated for books on the
veterans who served from Sandy Creek. For more information, please contact Charlene Cole at

- The Pulaski Historical Society will be hosting an open house from 10:00 a.m.
- 1:00 p.m. on October 16 at the Society at 3428 Maple Ave. The day will provide an
opportunity for people to view photos, postcards and other documents on the history of

St. Lawrence County
- The Ogdensburg Public Library and Dave E. Martin, author of the Aricda Book
"Ogdensburg," will be hosting "Share Your Past to Preserve Our Future" from 1:30-4:30 p.m.
on October 16 at the Library, 312 Washington Street, Ogdensburg. People are asked to bring
in their historical photographs, where they will be scanned and a brief history will be
recorded. The information will then be stored in a database. The scanning of area
historical photographs will create a digital repository. For more information, please

- The Stockholm Historical Organization will be hosting "Town of Stockholm
History" from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Oct. 10 and 14, and from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m.
on Oct. 12 at the Stockholm Historical Association History Center, Municipal Building,
Route 11, Winthrop. This open house of the History Center and Museum will provide the
Organization with the opportunity to gather information (photos and documentation) on
history of the town. The information is being compiled for a "Town of Stockholm" history

- The St. Lawrence County Historical Association will be hosting "Mystery
Photos" from 12:00-4:00 p.m., October 12-15 at the Historical Association, 3 East Main
Street, Canton. There will be an exhibit of photos of people and places which visitors will
be asked to help identify. The photos are currently unidentified. For more information,

- The Town of Dekalb Historical Association will be hosting "The History of the
East Dekalb Methodist Meetinghouse" at the Old Meeting House Museum, 696 East Dekalb Road.
The event will be held from 12:30-4:00 p.m. on October 13, and from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on
October 14. During this open house, the archives will be open for local research, and a
tour of the old Meetinghouse Museum will also be available. For more information, please

- The Potsdam Public Museum will be hosting "Picturing Potsdam" from 12:00-4:00
p.m., Tuesday-Saturday during the month of October, at the Museum located in the Civic
Center. There will be an exhibit introducing the Arcadia publication on Potsdam. The
display will feature photographs from the book with artifacts. All photos are from the
