Learn About GenealogyThe study of one's ancestry, family history, developing a family tree, finding one's roots - they all relate to genealogy. Genealogy has always been an enormously popular vocation and pastime, and in libraries, we know that questions relating to assisting patrons with genealogical research are among the most common requests. It can be a daunting task, but with the advent of the Internet, there's more information available than ever before, and it's easier to access. This rich source of information can, however, be a little overwhelming, especially for those new to cyberspace. In January, the Northern New York Library Network will offer an opportunity to help those interested in beginning their search for genealogical information. Two sessions of a half-day class will be held on January 12, 2004 at the Network office in Potsdam. Sessions will be 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. This class will cover researching ancestors and other family members on the Internet. It will include information on both free and commercial genealogy sites. Other topics include: techniques of searching various types of sites, mail lists, query boards, on-line newsletters, newsgroups, search engines, newspapers, and organizing information. The class includes hands-on practice, and it is assumed that attendees will be comfortable with the basics of using a computer, such as using a mouse to get around a web site or other document. The class will be taught by Norm Young, President, St. Lawrence Valley Genealogical Society (SLVGS); SLVGS Newsletter Editor; RootWeb St. Lawrence County Co-Coordinator and Webmaster. Library staff are invited to attend and to suggest this workshop to patrons requesting help with genealogy. The cost is $15.00 for library staff and $29.95 for all others. Registrations for the class can be made on the Network’s website, or by telephone. Go to: www.nnyln.org, click on "Workshops and Training." Telephone: 315-265-1119 or 1-877-833-1674. |
