Patrons’ Privacy Is Teleconference TopicOn December 11, the Network will sponsor a local broadcast of the teleconference SAFEGUARDING OUR PATRONS' PRIVACY: What Every Librarian Needs to Know About the USA PATRIOT Act & Related Anti-Terrorism Measures. This teleconference is jointly produced and sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries, the American Association of Law Libraries, the Medical Library Association, and the Special Libraries Association. This teleconference will provide libraries and their governing institutions with an analysis of the implications of the recent anti-terrorism measures, including the USA PATRIOT Act, the Attorney General's Guidelines expanding the investigative powers of the FBI, and the Homeland Security Act. Panelists will address the key legal issues and policy implications for libraries as well as the impact of legislative and regulatory proposals on the privacy and First Amendment rights of library users. Panelists will also identify steps that institutions need to take to comply with proper search warrants, subpoenas, and wiretap requests from law enforcement. The broadcast will take place at the Northern New York Library Network’s office in Potsdam, on Wednesday, December 11. The broadcast runs from noon to 3:00 p.m. Please join us for a light lunch before the telecast at 11:30 a.m. The Network will also sponsor a broadcast of this program at SUNY Plattsburgh.
