Professional Development Grants Approved

The Professional Development grant program continues to be very successful through the Northern New York Library Network.

The following library staff wrote successful applications for Professional Development grant funds in May 2002:

Nancy Alzo, SUNY Potsdam and Holly Heller-Ross, SUNY Plattsburgh will be attending the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Information Literacy Immersion Institute.

Barbara Osgood, Clarkson University, will be attending the New York State Library Assistants Association Annual Conference.

Ravil Veli, SUNY Plattsburgh, will attend the American Library Association annual conference, and Allison Wheeler, St. Lawrence Lewis BOCES School Library System, will attend the School Library Systems Association 2002 Conference.

Sarah Sachs, Potsdam Public Library, recently attended "Impressions and Experience" at Syracuse University.

With regard to the distance learning program at SU she said, "I find the distance learning situation to be an incredible opportunity for people who already have an established family and/or work life and live far enough away from a school to make a commute impossible.

"My favorite experience to date was a group project in Telecommunications and Information Policy class that I worked with two gentlemen, one a manager at ATT in Syracuse, and one a Japanese employee of a German telecommunications firm in Japan. We have never met, probably have little in common, and yet we wrote a policy paper that was passed around the globe for additions and editing a dozen times before it was finished," Ms. Sachs said.
