Carol White Receives Excellence Award

The recipient of the Network’s 12th Annual Award for Excellence in Library Service has worked tirelessly in bringing technology to her library, broadening library services, coordinating public service programs, and serving as a community leader.

The award was presented to Carol White, director of the Akwesasne Cultural Center, Inc. in Hogansburg. Ms. White received this recognition during the 37th Annual Northern New York Library Network meeting recently held in Lake Placid.

Ms. White was selected through confidential letters of nomination. Comments in those letters contained the following remarks about Ms. White:

"Our director, Carol White, has worked tirelessly on increasing the computer accessibility of the Akwesasne Library. We recently received six computers from Gateway, and two others through another grant that she accessed," a letter read. "She has had to ensure the computers are set up and regulated well for public use.

"There are usually people on the computers whenever the library is open. It is a service that is needed, used and appreciated by the community," the letter continued.

Ms. White’s constituents noted she started out at the library as a clerk and bookmobile driver and worked her way up while going to college and raising her family at the same time.

Unique aspects of Ms. White’s include running an international bookmobile, probably the only one that serves users in two nations, and supervision of the Akwesasne Museum, which is located in the same building as the library.

Carol White is shown receiving the 12th Annual Award for Excellence in Library Services. NNYLN Executive Director John Hammond is also shown.
