State Approves New Name

On July 19, 2001 the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York approved the name change request submitted by the North Country Reference and Research Resources Council. The Council will officially be called the Northern New York Library Network as of September.

During a spring meeting, the Council’s Board of Trustees had recommended changing the name to the Northern New York Library Network and submitted this to the Council membership for a vote. The membership approved the name change with a vote of 94 percent in favor, 6 percent opposed.

The rationale behind this change was based upon the belief that the Council's current name no longer reflects the purpose of the organization. The Council has developed into a network that connects users, staff, and information through a variety of physical, virtual, institutional, and personal connections, in partnership with libraries of all kinds. Although the Council still puts much work into developing "reference and research resources," the term "network" is a far more descriptive and contemporary description of what the Council does.

Also, the Council Board of Trustees believes that it's time for the Council, which has served libraries in the region for over thirty-five years, to have the word "library" in its name. Also, the Board believes that the Council's name should correctly reflect the chartered service area, which includes portions of Northern New York as well as the North Country.

The name change will be made official during an open house ceremony to be held at the Council’s new building in Potsdam during September.
