NNYLN Prepares For 45th Annual Meeting

The Northern New York Library Network is accepting online and phone registrations for its 45th Annual Meeting.

This year, the meeting will be held May 20 in Lake Placid at the Mirror Lake Inn. While meeting planning is still being finalized, this year’s event will have a somewhat different format and will provide attendees with opportunities for continuing education, as well as traditional meeting activities.

In addition to the regular attractions of the Network’s Annual Meeting, and the announcement of the 20th Annual Award for Excellence in Library Service award, attendees will have a choice of continuing education classes to attend. A total of four classes will be offered: two morning sessions and two afternoon sessions, as well as a luncheon speaker. Topics for the classes include two management/supervisory sessions and two technology sessions.

The NNY Library Network Board of Trustees will have a meeting at 9:30 a.m.

Registration for the Annual Meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the first session starting at 10:00 a.m. There is no fee to attend, but registration is required. To sign up and for more information as it becomes available, go online.

Make An Excellence Award Nomination Today

The Northern New York Library Network plans to present its 20th Annual Award for Excellence in Library Service at the 2010 Annual Meeting in Lake Placid on May 20.

The Network would like to encourage everyone to give a little thought to nominating a person for this award. Take a moment to think about the people you work with every day - whether it is a co-worker on staff with you, or perhaps someone you work with on committees and other projects outside your own workplace. When you start to look around, we’re sure you’ll notice someone who consistently does an excellent job and deserves some recognition.

Once you’ve found that person, please take a few moments to write a letter, or use the online registration form to send an email nomination.

Nominations will be held in the strictest of confidence, and the winner will receive a framed certificate, recognition at the annual meeting and in Network publications, and a $1,000 savings bond.

Having a little trouble getting the letter started? Here are a few things you may want to consider in nominating a colleague.

The person you are nominating has contributed to these goals:

  • Open access to information for all.

  • The encouragement of reading and creation of inducements to greater use of library materials.

  • The enhancement and expansion of library service to the community.

  • The strengthening of the library's role and position in the community, whether that community is a town, school, college or university, or a company, corporation or institution.

  • Promotion of interlibrary cooperation and sharing.

Nominations should be received at the NNYLN by April 22, 2010. We hope to hear from you soon!

  • Academic Librarians 2010

The event, Academic Librarians 2010 - "Faster than the Speed of Bytes: Technology, Cognition, and the Academic Librarian" will be held June 7 and 8, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Downtown, Ithaca.

Are we organically shaped by technology? If so, how can academic librarians respond? How do cognitive changes influence the ways libraries are lead, and how the users are taught? This conference will explore changes in cognitive development, based on new models of interacting with information, and how these new models will impact collections and services. Participants will examine what this means for academic librarians and the way they interact with users.

For complete details on the event, go online to www.nyla-asls.org.
