Donna Hanus Honored With Excellence Award

FEH SLS Director Donna Hanus received the 19th Excellence Award from the NNYLN. She is shown with NNYLN Director John Hammond (L) and NYS Librarian Bernard Margolis.
The winner of the 19th Annual Award for Excellence in Library Service is described as someone who has "...been a real leader at all levels, and as such, she helped bring school library systems to the table as a player in developing library policy, both regionally and for New York State."

Franklin-Essex-Hamilton School Library System Director Donna Hanus received the award from the Northern New York Library Network during its 44th Annual Meeting held May 21, 2009 at Clarkson University’s Cheel Center, Potsdam.

Each year the Network asks library directors/supervisors, co-workers or board members for confidential letters of nomination of a fellow colleague or supervisor they feel should be recognized for his/her outstanding service to libraries.

A letter of nomination for Ms. Hanus stated, "Donna has taken a leadership role in bringing library automation to the North Country.

"Donna has been a consistent proponent of school libraries, school library systems and regional and statewide cooperation," the letter continued.

"Donna instituted Book Reviewing, a flourishing program which brings new books from well-known publishers into the hands of librarians, who then review the books and get to add them to their collections," a nomination said. "Donna continues to organize and administrate this worthy program, which has placed well over $300,000 worth of free books into the libraries of the members of three school library systems."

It was further pointed out that Ms. Hanus has served as an officer of local, regional and statewide library organizations and continues to do so.
