Bernard Margolis The Northern New York Library Network is looking forward to the line-up of discussion groups slated for its 44th Annual Meeting being held on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the Cheel Center, Clarkson University, Potsdam. Following registration at 9:30 a.m., participants will have their choice of three discussion groups:
- Grant Writing: In the current economy libraries are losing funds from the traditional sources of federal, state and local governments. It has become more and more important that libraries and librarians seek other sources of funds. One method that can be of use to libraries is to begin to seek grant funding. This year’s annual meeting will provide a beginning step to finding and securing grant funding. Barbara Eden, Cornell University, will provide an overview of the grant writing process. She will discuss how to find institutions that give grants to libraries, how to approach these institutions, and what information needs to be included in a successful grant application.
- The Google You Don’t Know: In this session, Paul Doty, St. Lawrence University, will provide a look at the some of the lesser known utilities and functions of Google. While all librarians know about Google’s search engine, its maps functions, and book search and image management programs, there’s really so much more. Google can, for example, translate documents and phrases, provide ways to share information and communications, use mobile search functions, and much, much more.
- Disaster Preparedness: Sometimes learning by doing is not the best way. Learning to clean up and recover materials after a catastrophic event has occurred is one such occasion. The time to learn how to deal with a disaster is before it happens, and Joseph Swinyer, DHP Consultant will lead this group discussion on how to prepare for those events. The session will deal with the three aspects of disaster planning: prevention, response and recovery.
Discussion group activities will be followed by the Annual Meeting, including the announcement of the Network’s winner of the annual Award for Excellence in Library Service. This will be followed by lunch and finally, the Network is pleased to present the keynote speaker, New York State Librarian Bernard Margolis.
Mr. Margolis began serving as New York State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries in January 2009. Reporting to the Commissioner of Education, Mr. Margolis administers the New York State Research Library and the Division of Library Development. When the Flower Memorial Library underwent its major renovation in 2006, it recognized the need for a space young adults could call their own. And with the input of its users, the Teen Space has a new look for 2009!
Futuristic café tables and stools, floor rockers, and a funky rug have replaced the bean bag chairs and standard study table that used to occupy the space. A magazine spinner rack was added to free up shelf space so a non-fiction collection geared toward the teens could be brought into their area. The fiction collection was also weeded to make room for new titles purchased to reflect what the teens want to read.
The response to the new Teen Space has been overwhelmingly positive. This update would not have been possible if it were not for the donations received from their generous patrons.
