“Clarksonian” Yearbooks Are Added To NCDH Site

Clarkson University Librarian and Archivist Sylvia Haq is shown holding the 1960 edition of the “Clarksonian” yearbook, with issues from 1939 and 1967 in the background.

While the new smell of a freshly bound Clarkson yearbook may be missing, all of the information and photographs are fully intact and available online to the general public.

The yearbooks issued by Clarkson University and its predecessor Clarkson College, have been digitized and are available at http://history.nnyln.org/nc-clarkson.html

A total of 83 issues of the “Clarksonian” from 1924/1925 to 2008 have been scanned and indexed by the Clarkson University Library Archives under the direction of Librarian and Archivist Sylvia Haq. She was assisted by 36 student workers on the project.

Mrs. Haq noted it feels wonderful to have the project completed. “It took us two years and seven months; from September 2006 to February 25, 2009,” she said.

“The yearbooks are in demand in archives work. It is now very convenient for users. They don’t have to come to the archives – it’s all online, they can even view them from their dorm rooms,” the archivist said.

When alumni contact the university, they are now given the website address so they can view any of the 83 yearbooks online at their leisure. Mrs. Haq said the alumni are usually searching for a particular person.

“Many people want to have information about relatives. They may be looking for photos for a memorial, or a personal event. They like to look at yearbooks first,” she noted.

Mrs. Haq pointed out this was a very time consuming project. Those involved wanted it to be properly searchable, and proofed it page by page. “We are proud of this project and that it was done that way,” she said.

“I want to thank the Northern New York Library Network, and especially (executive director) John Hammond and (systems administrator) Tom Blauvelt. They have made this access possible. We could not have completed it without their assistance,” she stated.

New issues of the “Clarksonian” will be added in the future. “This is an on-going project,” Mrs. Haq said.

The Clarkson collection is part of the North Country Digital History project, which is coordinated by the Northern New York Library Network. The project is a collaborative effort of 15 organizations in the North Country region, and may be found online at history.nnyln.org

Winter Webinar Sessions Available On-Line

The NNYLN recently sponsored a series of “Winter Webinar” presentations. They were offered as a way for participants to experience a quality continuing education event without leaving the office during the blustery winter days.

The three Winter Webinars have been recorded and made available on an archived site. For those unable to participate, they may listen to the recorded conference through the Network’s website at www.nnyln.org. Click on “Classes and Facilities,” and then “Materials from Classes.”

All three webinars were filled to listener capacity.

The webinar “Meeting Your Customers on Their Own Turf” was held February 18; “Keeping Current/Keeping Up” was held March 4; and “Technology and Literacy” was held March 18, 2009.

Participants of the first webinar found the format very convenient and educational. Following the conference, they were asked to fill out a survey about whether they felt the webinar was useful to them.

Participants made the following comments:

St. Lawrence County Papers On NNYHN Site

The newest addition to the Northern New York Historical Newspapers website is being praised as a “great service.” The “St. Lawrence Republican” is now available online at http://news.nnyln.net.

Surviving issues cover 1833 to 1916 with some gaps. In addition to the “St. Lawrence Republican,” other newly added papers include its predecessor the “St. Lawrence Gazette,” 1827-1830; the “Northern Light,” 1831-1833; and the “St. Lawrence American,” 1856-1857.

Although published in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, the paper was the "official paper of the county" for many years and contains information about other areas as well.

NNYLN Systems Administrator Thomas Blauvelt pointed out, “Many of the early issues are discolored, have a lot of bleed-through and very small type - making indexing and even reading difficult.”

Dekalb Deputy Historian Bryan Thompson is working on the history of the Underground Railway movement and has already delved into researching the newly added papers.

“I have spent half the afternoon working with the ‘St Lawrence Republican’ on various areas of local historical research. I have uncovered a previously unknown (to me) meeting of the St Lawrence County Abolitionist Society in West Potsdam in July 1844,” he told the Network.

“I also uncovered records of the September 4, 1846 St. Lawrence County Liberty party convention in Parishville with their slate of candidates for county offices,” he added.

“As a local town historian, the digitization of the ‘St. Lawrence Republican’ and related newspapers is especially important. These papers are the only surviving runs of newspapers from this era in our county's history. Other records from this era are sparse at best,” he stated.

“This is a great service for local historians and genealogists. Thanks so much,” the historian said.

The NNYLN is currently working on additions to the “Adirondack Daily Enterprise” published in Saranac Lake and the “Press-Republican” published in Plattsburgh. There are now over 40 titles on the NNY Historical Newspapers site.

NNYLN Communications Coordinator Pamela Ouimet started the afternoon session showing participants how to load a video onto YouTube and their own websites. Shannon Pritting of SUNY Oswego then gave an impromptu presentation on “screen capturing” programs.
