Two Titles Added To Newspaper Site

Two newspaper titles from Franklin County have been added to a list of over 35 newspapers found online.

The Northern New York Historical Newspapers site at news.nnyln.net now includes "Brushton Facts and Fallacies" with a run from 1899-1954, and the "Malone Palladium" with a run from 1849-1909. The site is provided free of charge by the Northern New York Library Network.

Brushton is a small village west of Malone. While the newspaper’s pages were being scanned, it was discovered there are gaps in coverage for the paper and it appears that only certain pages of an issue were filmed.

The "Malone Palladium" collection includes its previous title, "Frontier Palladium" with a run from October 1849 to July 1863, with 1854 to 1859 missing.

Future titles to be added to the NNY Historical Newspapers site will include the "Black River Democrat" and the "Lowville Leader," both published in Lowville, and the "St. Lawrence Republican" published in Ogdensburg. The NNYLN is also working on adding more recent years to the file of the "Adirondack Daily Enterprise" published in Saranac Lake.

The Brushton and Malone papers are two of 35 newspapers, including more than 1,300,000 pages on the Northern New York Historical Newspapers site. Go to a news.nnyln.net for a complete listing of on-line newspapers, which may be searched by county or individual paper.

New Collections Are Added To Heritage Digital Site

New York Heritage Digital Collections has added 14 new digital collections to its cooperative site at newyorkheritage.org.

They include: three from Queens College; two each from the  Brooklyn Public Library, CUNY Graduate Center, Yeshiva University, and Brooklyn College; and one each from  SUNY Maritime College, Lehman College, and Metropolitan New York Library Council.

These collections total 3,016 items, and represent a broad range of research interests, including  Brooklyn Democratic Party Scrapbooks, Fulton Street Trade Cards, Murray Hill Collection, Sailors' Snug Harbor Archives, Waterways of New York,  Breslau Memorial and Prayer Book, and Bronx Business for Everybody collections.

NewYorkHeritage.org is a project of the NY3Rs Association, which uses OCLC’s CONTENTdm Multisite Server to bring previously digitized collections together, allowing researchers to search across all items simultaneously. This project provides free, online access to images of cultural and historical significance in New York State.

Participants in New York Heritage Digital Collections are committed to enhancing the site by adding both content and contributing institutions on a regular basis. The  goal of the project is to eventually connect one thousand collections and one million items from throughout  New York State. All institutions interested in participating in the project are encouraged to contact the 3Rs organization that serves their region.

The New York 3Rs Association is a partnership among New York’s nine reference and research resource systems. The New York 3Rs was incorporated in 2003 to further the ability of those systems to provide statewide services. The members of the New York 3Rs Association are: the Capital District Library Council,  Central New York Library Resources Council, Long Island Library Resources Council, Metropolitan New York Library Council, Northern New York Library Network,  Rochester Regional Library Council,  Southeastern New York Library Resources Council,  South Central Regional Library Council, and  Western New York Library Resources Council.

Advanced Ask Us 24/7 Class Is Being Offered

Advanced training in the use of the Ask Us 24/7 virtual reference program will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the NNYLN office, Potsdam. Training will be conducted by Jaclyn McKewan, Special Projects Librarian, Western New York Library Resources Council.

All Ask Us 24/7 users should plan to attend this session. It will enhance the training provided last August by walking students through various advanced features and utilities, provide a refresher for those who attended the August training but have not as yet actually begun providing service, and provide an opportunity to discuss common problems and share useful tips and tricks. Libraries interested in participating in the Ask Us 24/7 service are also welcome to attend this class to learn more about the service.

Included in the training will be:

  • "Chat" refresher and hands-on practice
  • Advanced "Chat," including chatting with two patrons at once
  • Some examples of the "Qwidget" (a chat interface that resembles a little Meebo box that libraries can put on their website instead of the standard chat link)
  • Open session for discussion, questions, problems and troubleshooting

Archival Directory Online

The 2009-11 edition of the "Directory of Archival and Historical Document Collections" is available online on the Northern New York Library Network’s website at www.nnyln.org and click on "Archival Programs" then the Directory link.

It was the Network’s intention to make a hard copy of the 2009-11 Directory, but the unforeseen New York State budget cuts have made for the trimming of our own budget as well. The Network, therefore, does not have the funding to print this edition of the document.

Online, the Directory may be utilized or printed out in its entirety in PDF format. It may also be used and viewed in sections through the many direct links provided.
