St. Lawrence County Newspapers Added To Site

Nearly 80 years of St. Lawrence County history have been added to the NNYLN’s Northern New York Historical Newspapers website, including one entirely new paper, extended coverage of another, and the re-scanning of yet another for better quality.

The "Norwood News" (1879-1941), and additional editions of the "Potsdam St. Lawrence Herald" (1879-1896) have been added to the Northern New York Historical Newspapers web site at news.nnyln.net. The site is provided free of charge to the public by the Northern New York Library Network in Potsdam.

The entire run of the "Potsdam St. Lawrence Herald" now includes 1879-1904. The 1861-1893 editions of the "Potsdam Courier-Freeman" have also been re-scanned on a higher quality scanner in order to get better images. The full run of this paper is from 1861-1989.

One of just many interesting things that can be found in the "Norwood News" is an ad in the December 21, 1880 edition that stated the "Massena Stage leaves Norwood every day at 2 o’clock, arriving at Massena Springs at 4:15 p.m., Massena 4:30. Returning leaves Massena at 7:30 o’clock a.m., Massena Springs 7:45 arriving at Norwood at 10:30 a.m., in time for the trains going South on the R.W. & O. railroad, and East and West on the O. & L.C. Railroad - Geo. Hawes, Proprietor."

There are now 35 newspapers, including more than 1,300,000 pages on the Northern New York Historical Newspapers site. Go to news.nnyln.net for a complete listing of on-line newspapers, which may be searched by county or individual paper.
