Library Assistants Committee Seeks New Members
By Pat Wiley
Saranac Lake Free Library AssistantThe NNYLN Library Assistants Committee invites library assistants from throughout the North Country to join its planning committee.
The committee of the Northern New York Library Network considers continuing education for library assistants (those who work in a library, but typically do not have a library degree) a priority. While class attendance is open to all, committee membership is limited to staff of NNYLN member libraries. The committee usually has about 10 members.
Committee members serve an advisory role, meeting at least twice a year to plan the two Library Assistants conferences held in the spring and fall. NNYLN staff follow through on the plans, making the arrangements, and keeping committee members informed via email.
Classes are held at various libraries and at different locations throughout the North Country to facilitate travel for attendees. Recent classes have included:
- Change: It’s a Good Thing
- Setting Professional Goals
- Safeguarding Your Personal Computer
- Graphic Novels
- Leadership Skills
- Personal Safety
Sites have included Canton, Paul Smiths and Plattsburgh, and the fall conference is set to be held in Tupper Lake.
Participation in this committee is an excellent way to network with library assistants from other libraries and to have an impact on designing programs for those in the field.
Anyone interested in joining the committee is asked to contact Bridget Doyle or call her at 315 -265-1119. The next meeting will be take place on October 23, 2008 following the fall conference.
