The Council Prepares To Make A Move

After completing a space and program usage analysis, the Council's Building Committee and Board of Trustees have determined it's time for the Council to move into larger, more contemporary quarters, which will be constructed on Route 11, between Canton and Potsdam.

The new Council building will include a 20-person electronic classroom for instruction in the use of technology, a meeting room designed to seat 60, administrative and program office space, and parking for 50 vehicles. The building will support distance learning technology and will be fully handicapped accessible.

Prior to making this decision, the Council considered several alternatives, including building an addition or redesigning existing space at its current office, leasing space, or buying an existing building. None of these alternatives would have achieved Council service goals or permitted program growth.

The new offices, which will measure approximately 5,000 square feet, will be located on a five acre parcel of land approximately five miles south of the Village of Potsdam on Route 11. Construction will begin in either late fall 2000, or early spring 2001. The project architect will be Brooks Washburn, AIA, of Potsdam.

All of the Council's existing office building at 7 Commerce Lane in Canton, will be leased to NorthNet Internet Services, the Council's wholly owned subsidiary.

Watch for future editions of Points North for details of what the building will look like, what the construction schedule will be, and when the building dedication will take place!
