The Northern New York Library Network (NNYLN) is a regional multitype library agency primarily dedicated to cooperatively providing support and services necessary for all of its members to meet their individual goals. The Council serves libraries in the seven counties of Northern New York for the ultimate benefit of the library user.
Services to members include interlibrary loan, union listing of magazine titles, publications, cataloging, group access to automated data bases, automated bibliographic data base searching, data base building and distribution, electronic mail/communications systems, equipment distribution, coordinated collection development, and professional development programs.
NNY Library Network is one of nine councils chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 1965, and is part of a coordinated state wide plan for services to all types of libraries. The Northern New York region covers the largest geographic area of the nine councils, serving libraries in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, and St. Lawrence counties.
The Council is governed by a 14 member board of trustees, which includes representatives from a variety of library types, as well as lay members. The Board's main function is one of dealing with matters of policy and budget, while basic operation and administration is carried out by Council staff.
The New York State Discretionary Grant Program for the Conservation and Preservation of Library Research Materials was authorized under Education Law, Section 273.7(d) in 1984 and expanded in 1986. Its purpose is to encourage the proper care and accessibility of research material in the State, to promote the use and development of guidelines and standards for conservation/preservation work, and to support the growth of local and cooperative preservation programs.
