Spring 2008
Spring Roundtables Are Planned
The Clinton-Essex Counties Spring Regional Roundtable will be held Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the Samuel de Champlain History Center in Champlain. The topic of discussion will be "Interpretive Use of Collections" and will run from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The presenters will be John Krueger, Kent-DeLord House Museum; and Don Papson, North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association. The moderator will be Virginia Westbrook, Historian and Exhibition Consultant, The Virginia Company, Crown Point.
The discussion will focus on interpreting historic materials. Each presenter will offer an example of a historic document, a photograph and an artifact from their collection and discuss how they are used to "tell the story." A tour of the History Center will part of the day, and lunch will be provided at the end of the Roundtable. For more information on the event, contact Essex County Historical Society Director Margaret Gibbs at 518-873-6466.
The St. Lawrence-Franklin Spring Regional Roundtable will be held Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the Lawrence Town Hall. The topic of discussion will be "Interviewing & Oral History" and will run from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The facilitator for the day will be Jill Breit, Folklorist and Director of Traditional Arts in Upstate New York.
Ms. Breit will discuss how to perform interviews and oral histories. Everyone has a story to tell, but they are often at a loss as to how to capture that story. Participants will find out how to do oral histories, get recommendations on equipment to use, and find out what to do with the oral histories once they have been collected. The Roundtable will end with a tour of the Lawrence Town Historian's Office. For more information on the event, contact St. Lawrence County Historical Association Director Trent Trulock at 315-386-8133.
The Jefferson-Lewis-Oswego Spring Regional Roundtable will be held Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the Phoenix Public Library, Century Room. The topic of discussion will be "Planning Projects for Archives Month - A Primer" and will run from 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The facilitator for the day will be Lisa Becker, Executive Director of Lewis County Historical Society and Lewis County Historian; and Barbara Dix, historian for the Village of Phoenix and the Town of Schroeppel.
This hands-on event will take a look behind closed doors. What do repositories have in their collections? How to: develop a project for public view, advertise, work with the media, find venues to display, work with schools, showcase local treasures, and share with the community. Participants may wish to continue their discussion "Dutch treat" over lunch. For more information on the event, contact Ms. Becker at 315-376-8957.
There is no fee to attend any of the Roundtables, but advance registration through the NNYLN is required.
