Advisory & Technical Assistance Provided

A number of repositories have taken advantage of the Advisory and Technical Assistance program provided through the Documentary Heritage Program at no cost.

A consultant came to the following repositories and offered advice on how they can better address some of their most important concerns.

A site visit to the Tupper Lake Historical Society with the Goff Nelson Memorial Library in Tupper Lake was made on July 23, 1999.

The consultant recommended that all photographs be stored in acid-free mylar sleeves and acid-free folders; archival quality file folders should have tabs for labeling of contents; and that the transfer of the Free Press photograph collection to Goff Nelson Memorial Library must involve a gift statement or long-term loan agreement.

A site visit was made on August 23, 1999 to the Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society in Schroon Lake.

The consultant made the general recommendations to have the historical records consolidated and housed in a space reserved specifically for them; to have one person assume the overall responsibility for the historical records program; and the Strengthening New York’s Historical Records Programs should be the authority for the administration of the historical records program.

A site visit was made to the Wells Memorial Library in Upper Jay on September 8, 1999.

The consultant recommended that space in the library addition should be allocated for the historical records collection; one person should have the overall responsibility for the historical records program; and the Strengthening New York’s Historical Records Programs should be the authority for the administration of the historical records program.

In the report for each site visit, the consultant gave a detailed listing of what materials would be needed to incorporate each suggestion. The consultant also included a number of appendices on models, guidelines and samples dealing with associated topics.
