Roundtables Set For Oct. 18The three fall Regional Roundtables are all scheduled to take place during Archives Month beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2008. The Clinton-Essex Roundtable will be held at the Adirondack History Center/Essex County Historical Society in Elizabethtown, where the topic will be "Digitization Best Practices for Cultural Heritage Groups." The discussion will be lead by Adirondack History Center Museum Archivist Jennifer Kuba and will focus on digitization best practices for cultural heritage institutions. This presentation will address "What is digitization?" and "Why do we want to do it?" The topics covered will include: understanding the process, scanning, selection of materials to digitize, sustainability in an ever changing technological world, copyright, and metadata. There will also be a tour of the Adirondack History Center, and lunch will be provided. For more information on the event, contact Essex County Historical Society Director Margaret Gibbs at 518-873-6466. To register for this free event, contact the NNY Library Network, or sign up online. The Franklin-St. Lawrence Roundtable will be held at the Franklin County Historical & Museum Society in Malone, where the topic will be "Managing Digital Assets." The discussion facilitators will be Northern New York Library Network Systems Manager/Head of Bibliographic Services Tom Blauvelt, and SUNY Plattsburgh’s Feinberg Library Senior Assistant Librarian Debra Kimok. It seems that everyone is digitizing historic records and collections. But people are wondering what is to be done with them then? Mr. Blauvelt and Ms. Kimok will lead the discussion on digital assets: what are they, what to do with them, local projects and cooperative ventures, and why you shouldn’t fear the digital wave of the future. Participants are invited to bring questions regarding historical collections and the digital frontier. Lunch is on your own. For more information on the event, contact St. Lawrence County Historical Association Director Trent Trulock at 315-386-8133. The Jefferson-Lewis-Oswego Roundtable will be held at the Lewis County Historical Society in Lowville, where the topic will be "A Primer in DHP Grant Writing." The discussion facilitators will be DHP Consultant Katie DeFazio, and Schroeppel Town Historian/Village of Phoenix Historian Barbara Dix. Many people wonder how they’ll ever manage to get through all the paperwork and requirements to submit a DHP Grant. What the heck and how do you complete the: Category and Narrative Forms and Budget Summary Form (FS-20); Payee ID Form; Schedule of Cost Sharing; Letters of Intent and nine copies of what is signed in blue or black ink? The discussion will include an overview of the DHP Program along with a grant writing primer, as well a description of the various projects that have received funding to preserve records in Oswego County. The roundtable will end in a brainstorming session to prepare participants for Archives Month 2009!
