On-Site Consultations Proving Helpful
On-site consultations continue to be valuable experiences to museums and repositories in the NNYLN’s
seven-county region.
A consultation was conducted for the Ticonderoga Historical Society on April 21, 2007.
As the Society prepared to submit a grant application, the consultant noted when an archivist is hired
he/she should take note that some pieces of the collection require repair and encapsulation; a number of
indexes exist and should be retained to access records; and a reference to the Loescher Collection
should be added to the website.
A site review was conducted for the Town of Lawrence Historian’s Office on June 8, 2007.
The consultant suggested a processing form accompany all gift collections from receipt; extremely
deteriorated pieces require the attention of a professional conservator; limited but set hours be
established and observed by the Society; and an archival security policy be put into place.
A site review was conducted for the Thousand Islands Museum in Clayton, on June 13, 2007.
The consultant recommended the photographs be scanned at 600 dpi; an Excel spreadsheet be created
indicating the file name and other information about each photograph; and notebooks be scanned at 300 dpi.
During all site visits, comments made by the consultants were advisory in nature; facilities were
encouraged, but not required to act on the recommendations.
Any archives or historical documents repository interested in having an on-site consultation is
encouraged to fill out the application form, which can be found at
www.nnyln.net/dhpapp.php, and send it back to the Northern New York Library Network.
Remember, no institution is too small or too big to be considered.
