Fall 2007

Take Part In A Roundtable

While many people still have picnics and beaches on their minds, others are gearing up for the events of fall. Included in those activities are the three fall Regional Roundtables sponsored by the Northern New York Library Network - so mark those calendars!

The Jefferson-Lewis-Oswego Roundtable will be held September 8, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Jefferson County Historical Society, 228 Washington St., Watertown. The discussion topic will be "Exhibits on a Shoestring Budget," and will be presented by Lisa Becker, Lewis County Historical Society Executive Director, with Tim Able, Jefferson County Historical Society Director. Showcasing a museum’s or historical society’s collection in exhibitions allows the public to be introduced to an organization’s holdings, and allows the public to see what is being held "in trust" on their behalf.  However, developing exhibits can be extremely costly. Few medium to small size museums and historical societies have significant funds in their budgets for developing exhibits. This program will discuss some of the ways organizations can develop exhibits while existing on a shoe-string-budget. Registrations for this Roundtable are to be made directly with Ms. Becker. A luncheon will be provided at a cost of $11.95 per person (catered by Savory). Checks should be made payable to LCHS by August 31, 2007 to: Lisa Becker, Lewis County Historical Society, P.O. Box 446 , Lowville, NY 13367; or phone: 315-376-8957.

The Clinton-Essex Roundtable will be held September 29, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Lake Placid North Elba Historical Society, 242 Station Street, Lake Placid. The discussion topic will be "Exhibition Techniques," and will be presented by Virginia Westbrook, Historian and Exhibition Consultant, The Virginia Company, Crown Point. The discussion will focus on interpreting and displaying materials of historic interest to the public. Included in the discussion will be guidelines for exhibiting historic materials, installing low-cost displays and hiring exhibit professionals. There will be a tour of the Museum. For more information, contact Essex County Historical Society Director Margaret Gibbs at 518-873-6466. Contact the NNYLN to sign up for this event. There is no fee to attend.

The St. Lawrence-Franklin Roundtable will be held October 13, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Chateaugay Village Office, 8 Iron Avenue, Chateaugay. The discussion topic will be "Distance Learning," and will be presented by William Cavanaugh, Instructional Technology Coordinator for the Ogdensburg School District, and Trustee of the Frederic Remington Art Museum. Looking for a new way to reach students and teachers with your historic document collection? If so, then distance learning may just be what’s needed. Distance learning uses the Internet to allow students and teachers to interact with each other and history collections without leaving their classroom. The Frederic Remington Art Museum, in conjunction with their local BOCES, is developing a distance learning project that is debuting this fall in Ogdensburg. Facilitator William Cavanaugh is helping to plan the Remington distance learning project. For more information contact St. Lawrence County Historical Association Director Trent Trulock at 315-386-8133. Contact the NNYLN to sign up for this event. There is no fee to attend.
