Preservation Series Of Workshops Being HeldThe Northern New York Library Network is pleased to announce it will be holding a three-part Preservation Series this fall. Participants are welcome to attend all of the workshops, or pick and choose from any of the three. Archives, museum and repository staff members, along with library staff, may attend for the reduced rate of $15.00 per workshop. The cost is $59.95 for all others. Lunch is included with each event. All classes will take place from 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Northern New York Library Network office in Potsdam. Part 1: Basic Preservation; September 7, 2006 As an introduction to Basic Preservation, this workshop will focus on planning. Students will learn the importance of written and approved policies, collections care and education. This workshop will present basic definitions, including the nature of specific materials and agents of deterioration. Students will learn the necessary pieces of a preservation program, including:
Instructor: Michele Brown, Cornell University Part 2: Preservation of Scrapbooks; September 25, 2006 The bane of existence for many libraries, archives and other repositories, scrapbooks and albums nevertheless represent an important part of historical collections. However, they present a number of preservation challenges, and finding solutions can be difficult. In this workshop, students will discuss:

Participants are invited to bring in their own examples for examination and discussion by the class. Instructors: David Stokoe, Assistant Conservator, Special Collections, Syracuse University; and Peter Verheyen, Associate Librarian, Special Collections, Syracuse University Part 3: Basic Preservation of Photographs; October 25, 2006 An introduction to the preservation of photographs, this workshop focuses on historical photographic prints, including their identification, deterioration, and conservation. Participants learn how to recognize various photographic formats and study the preservation problems associated with each format type. The class discusses storage concerns, and if time permits, will examine photographs brought in by participants.
