On-Site Consultations Conducted In The NNYLN’s Region

On-site consultations are continuing to be a popular service provided by the NNYLN in conjunction with the DHP program.

The Joan Weill Adirondack Library at Paul Smith’s College had a site visit on March 2, 2006.

The consultant suggested a user-friendly title for the historical records collection space be developed, print volumes be commercially rebound if needed, finding aids be available at service points, call slips be used to track use and ensure user accountability, and a collection brochure or information sheet be considered.

A site review was conducted for the Clinton County Historical Association in Plattsburgh on February 25, 2006.

The consultant suggested guidelines for use of the historical document collection be adopted, a policy on digital image usage be developed, an effort be made to get all records into PastPerfect, a campaign be conducted to recruit new volunteers, and the glass plate negatives should not be housed in the basement.

During all site visits, comments made by the consultants were advisory in nature; facilities were encouraged, but not required, to act on the recommendations.

No collection is too large or too small to be considered for an on-site review. Repositories are asked to fill out an application form that may be found on-line at www.nnyln.org/dhpapp.php to be considered for a consultation.

This service is provided free of charge to repositories within the NNYLN’s seven-county region.
