Get Involved With Archives Week 2006

National Archives Week 2006 is being celebrated October 8-14. This provides the perfect opportunity for archives to showcase their collections and holdings to the public and political sector.

Activities can include an open house, class visit, lecture, slide and/or tape presentation, workshop, walking tour, display, photo exhibit, reception, essay contest, or asking local residents to get involved by sharing their memorabilia.

Repositories are also asked to remind their legislators about the DHP, and what they are doing to preserve New York’s Documentary Heritage during Archives Week and every week!

Institutions can do this in a number of ways:

  • Celebrate Archives Week and invite local legislators to any events, exhibits or activities.
  • For those doing projects with the schools, alert representatives. If there is a prize giving for student projects using local historical records, let the representative take part.
  • Celebrating an anniversary? Invite legislators to take part.
  • Opening a new exhibit or facility? Let your local assembly person and/or state senator cut the ribbon.
  • Any other ideas to get legislators in the news for showing support for historical records should be considered.

Repositories getting involved in Archives Week are asked to submit the following information to the NNYLN by Sept. 29, 2006:

  1. Date(s) of event
  2. Time
  3. Location w/ street address
  4. Sponsoring organization
  5. County
  6. Contact name & phone number
  7. Type of program
  8. Title of program
  9. Brief program description

The Network will forward all responses to the NYS Archives for inclusion in the Archives Week activities list available on their website. The listing may be found at www.archives.nysed.gov/a/newsroom/news_calendar.shtml Click on "Events and Activities" and the month of October.

The NNYLN will also prepare articles on regional activities for media press releases.

Repositories may wish to consider individual press releases to local media. At a minimum, you will want to include the same information to the media that is supplied to the Network. Repositories may, however, want to elaborate a bit more with the details for their press article. Check with local media for press release deadlines to assure timely publication of Archives Week activities.
