Fall 2006

Roundtables Are Scheduled

As we prepare to see school buses back on the road and the changing color of leaves on the trees, it’s time to mark those calendars for the upcoming fall Regional Roundtables.

The Clinton-Essex Regional Roundtable will be held September 16, 2006 at the Newcomb Historical Society, Route 28N, Newcomb. The topic will be "Preservation Archiving on a Shoe- String Budget." The Roundtable will run from 9:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. The discussion will focus on budgeting for preservation, prioritizing needs, and purchasing items needed for the proper care and storage of archival materials. The day will also include a tour of the Newcomb Historical Society and lunch on site. There is no fee to attend the Roundtable, but registration with the NNYLN is appreciated.

Following this event, there will be a wagon ride into Historic Great Camp Santanoni from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at a cost of $15.00. Reservations are required, and may be made by calling Essex County Historical Society Director Margaret Gibbs at 518-873-6466 by September 7. The Santanoni Preserve is a 12,500 acre preserve, home to the Santanoni Lodge, built in the 1890’s for Robert C. Pruyn. He was an aide to Governor Dix, President of National Commercial Bank and a Regent of the University of the State of New York. Theodore Roosevelt and James Fenimore Cooper, Jr. were among many distinguished visitors who regularly visited the Pruyns at their Adirondack Camp. For more information go to www.newcombny.com/santanoni.htm.

The Franklin-St. Lawrence Regional Roundtable will be held October 14, 2006 at the Akwesasne Cultural Center, 321 State Rt. 37, Hogansburg, from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The topic will be "Scanning & Historic Documents," and the discussion will be lead by North Country author David Martin.

Mr. Martin has many years of experience in digitization and travels with his portable scanning equipment to assist museums, libraries, historians, and special collections around the region. He has worked on many scanning projects. He is the author of Ogdensburg and Around Oswegatchie, co-author of Massena, and scanned the images for St. Lawrence County Portraits and Canton. Mr. Martin has created CD’s of digitized maps, including a large wall map, and DVD’s of books that can be searched electronically. Mr. Martin will give a demonstration of his traveling scanning techniques and answer questions regarding how to get started scanning historic documents. Participants are invited to bring questions and experiences on scanning documents, photographs, and other historic materials to the Roundtable. Although there is no fee to attend, registration with the NNYLN is appreciated.

The Jefferson-Lewis-Oswego Regional Roundtable will be held October 21, 2006 at the Sandy Creek Town Hall, and will begin at 9:30 a.m. The topic of discussion will be "Community Resources: Tapping Community Resources, Involving Students, Seniors, Towns & County." Participants will learn how to cultivate and train a volunteer base; once they find them, how to keep them involved; recognizing volunteers, and remembering how to say "thank you." Participants will also hear the volunteer’s side of the story.

An optional lunch will be offered for $6.00 per person (a wrap tray, chips and soda; cake for desert). Registrations for this Roundtable are to be made directly with Lewis County Historical Society Director Lisa Becker at 315-376-8957.
