Fall 2003

Fall Roundtables Are Set

The sight of school buses on the roads, and the hot days of summer giving way to the cooler days of autumn means only one thing - it’s time to attend the fall Regional Roundtables!

The Franklin-St. Lawrence Roundtable will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on September 13, 2003 at the Almanzo & Laura Ingalls Wilder Association in Burke. The discussion will be "Collections Management - Getting What You Want," and will be lead by Carol White and Sue Ellen Herne of the Akwesasne Cultural Center Library and Museum. The discussion will focus on many different aspects of collections management including: how to get donations that you really want, managing the collections that you have, what to do with things you don’t want, and why a collection policy can be your best friend. There will be plenty of handouts to illustrate best practices in the field. Participants are encouraged to bring their own collections management questions or share their experience with the group. There will also be a tour of the Wilder Association Farm as part of the program. While lunch is on your own, participants are invited to bring a lunch and eat it at the pavilion at the Wilder Farm.

There is no fee to attend, but please register by Sept. 8 by contacting the NNYLN. For more information, contact SLCHA Director Trent Trulock at 315-386-8133.

The Clinton-Essex Roundtable will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on September 20, 2003 at the Wells Memorial Library in Upper Jay. The topic of discussion will be "Care and Handling of Historical Records," and will be lead by Joe Swinyer. The discussion will focus on basic principles for the care and handling of archival materials: storage, routine maintenance, processing, use, and the development of a disaster plan. There will also be a tour of the Wells Memorial Library. Lunch will be served on-site.

There is no fee to attend, but please register by Sept. 17 by contacting the NNYLN. For more information, contact Margaret ECHS Director Gibbs at 518-873-6466.

The Jefferson-Lewis-Oswego Roundtable will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on September 27, 2003 at the Sackets Harbor Battlefield Historic Site, 505 West Washington Street in Sackets Harbor. The topic of discussion will be "The Care and Feeding of Volunteers," and will be lead by JCHS Executive Director Fred Rollins. The discussion will focus on identifying volunteers in the community, recruiting volunteers, training volunteers, volunteer rights and responsibilities, and how volunteers can be of benefit to your organization. The emphasis will be on group discussions, suggestions, and comments. Participants are asked to bring their own views, ideas and questions they would like discussed at the roundtable about how we can better utilize that scarce resource - volunteers. Afterwards, there will be a special historic demonstration and tour of the Sackets Harbor Battlefield Site. Lunch is on your own; an informal group will be organized.

There is no fee to attend, but please register by Sept. 23 by contacting the NNYLN. For more information, contact Mr. Rollins at 315-782-3491.

All Regional Roundtables are open to the public, no matter what region you are from.
