Area Institutions Receive Grant Monies

Commissioner of Education Richard Mills recently announced a total of 508 local government and community organizations in the state will receive grants totaling approximately $8.9 million from the New York State Archives to care for their public records.

Funds awarded to local governments are called Local Government Records grants, while community organizations receive Documentary Heritage Program grants.

To date, the Legislature has appropriated $6.25 million for this program.

The following repositories are located within the NNYLN’s region and received grants through this project.

In Clinton County:

  • AuSable Valley Central School District in Clintonville received $14,495 for Records Creation and System Design.
  • Clinton County in Plattsburgh received $63,199 for Records Creation and System Design.
  • Town of Clinton received $3,289 for Inventory and Planning.

In Essex County:

  • Village of Saranac Lake received $37,294 for Inactive Records.

In Franklin County:

  • Franklin County in Malone received $10,039 for Archival Records.

In Jefferson County:

  • City of Watertown received $8,000 for Records Creation and System Design.
  • Indian River Central School in Philadelphia received $46,429 for Inventory and Planning.
  • Jefferson County in Watertown received $62,299 for Active Records, and $59,582 for Records Creation and System Design.
  • Jefferson-Lewis Teacher Center received $13,179 for Educational Uses of Local Government Records.
  • Town of Alexandria received $8,097 for Active Records.
  • Town of Ellisburg received $8,549 for Inactive Records.
  • Town of Orleans received $10,802 for Inventory and Planning.
  • Town of Pamelia received $6,559 for Inventory and Planning.
  • Town of Philadelphia received $6,755 for Active Records.
  • Town of Rutland received $9,452 for Inventory and Planning.
  • Town of Theresa received $3,618 for Active Records.
  • Village of Alexandria Bay received $5,014 for Inventory and Planning.
  • Village of Brownville received $8,839 for Active Records.
  • Village of Clayton received $8,406 for Active Records.
  • Village of Theresa received $5,667 for Inventory and Planning.

In Lewis County:

  • Lewis County in Lowville received $48,864 for Active Records, and $15,000 for Records Creation and System Design.
  • Town of Montague received $9,295 for Inactive Records.
  • Village of Lowville received $7,542 for Inactive Records.

In Oswego County:

  • City of Oswego received $5,000 for Records Creation and System Design.
  • Oswego BOCES received $18,000 for Records Creation and System Design.
  • Oswego County in Oswego received $124,846 for microfilming.
  • Phoenix Central School received $23,071 for Inactive Records.
  • Town of Volney received $6,261 for Active Records.
  • Village of Phoenix received $6,140 for Active Records.

    In St. Lawrence County:

    • Brasher Falls Central School received $7,741 for Inactive Records.
    • Edwards-Knox Central School received $1,294 for Microfilming.
    • Madrid-Waddington Central School received $11,575 for Inactive Records.
    • Potsdam Central School received $26,870 for Inactive Records.
    • St. Lawrence County in Canton received $3,000 for Inactive Records, and $38,258 for Microfilming.
    • Town of Canton received $7,206 for Active Records.
    • Town of Massena received $26,559 for Microfilming.
    • Town of Potsdam received $17,315 for Inventory Planning.
    • Village of Gouverneur received $18,238 for Microfilming.
    • Village of Massena received $14,400 for Records Creation and System Design.
    • Village of Potsdam received $2,231 for Inactive Records.

    Local Government Records grants are designed to assist local governments develop, maintain, and update records management systems that improve access to local government records.

    Many of the community organizations that receive Documentary Heritage grants will use them to identify, collect and make available records relating to under-documented groups and topics in the state.
